Bacteriostatic water and choosing a solvent

The solvent you reconstitute with is part of the experiment, not an afterthought. For most research peptides the default choice is bacteriostatic water, but a handful of sequences call for something else. This article explains the reasoning so you can match the diluent to the compound.

What bacteriostatic water is
Bacteriostatic water is sterile water that contains a small amount of a preservative, most often 0.9% benzyl alcohol. The preservative slows microbial growth inside the vial, which is what lets a multi-use container stay usable across repeated entries rather than being a single-use solution.
That preservative is also why bacteriostatic water has a limited life once opened. It slows contamination, it does not stop it, so effectiveness drops with each needle entry. Storage and beyond-use timing are covered in storing research peptides and bacteriostatic water.
Why it is the default
For most peptides, bacteriostatic water hits the right balance: it dissolves the powder cleanly, it keeps the reconstituted solution stable across a normal working period, and the preservative guards against contamination during repeated sampling. That combination makes it the standard reconstitution solvent across the research-peptide field.
When to choose a different solvent
Bacteriostatic water is the starting point, not a universal answer. Reach for an alternative when the compound or your protocol calls for it.
- Sterile water for injection. Some peptides precipitate in the presence of sodium chloride, and a few protocols need a preservative-free diluent. Plain sterile water avoids both the salt and the benzyl alcohol.
- Acidified water. Sequences that stay cloudy in plain bacteriostatic water sometimes dissolve well with a mild acid added, such as 0.1% acetic acid.
- A compound-specific diluent. Certain peptides only dissolve fully in a particular solvent. Epithalon is the common example: it is typically reconstituted with a benzyl-alcohol solution, and other diluents leave it partly undissolved.
The rule of thumb
Start with bacteriostatic water unless the product notes or your protocol say otherwise. If the solution will not go clear with gentle mixing, the solvent is the first thing to reconsider, not the mixing technique. Match the diluent to the sequence, bring everything to room temperature, and add it slowly.
