NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a coenzyme found in every living cell. It plays a central role in turning food into usable cellular energy and acts as required fuel for enzymes that regulate repair and aging. Its levels are known to decline as the body gets older.
Research centers on two roles: shuttling electrons through the mitochondria to produce energy, and serving as the substrate that sirtuins and PARP enzymes need to carry out DNA repair and cellular maintenance. Most study focuses on aging and longevity, metabolism, mitochondrial energy, and cellular repair.
Much of the strongest human evidence involves NAD+ precursors like NR and NMN, which reliably raise NAD+ levels, while the longevity and disease-prevention claims remain largely early-stage and preclinical.
