Semax is a synthetic peptide derived from a fragment of the hormone ACTH, developed and approved as a prescription medicine in Russia. It's best known in cognitive and neuroprotection research, where attention centers on focus, memory, and the brain's response to stress and injury.
Research points to its effect on BDNF, a signaling protein tied to learning and the growth and survival of brain cells, along with influence on the brain's stress-response and dopamine systems. Most studies focus on attention and cognition, stroke recovery, and neuroprotection.
Much of the human clinical work comes from Russia, where Semax is an approved drug, while broader claims rest on animal and laboratory research. It is not FDA-approved in the United States.
